Dear citizens and guests of Alytus, participants of the sport walking festival
This year, for the 49th time, the Alytus Race Walking Championships will go into the history of sport - for the first time, we will be welcoming the professionals and enthusiasts of the sport to the World Walking Tour competition. This time, it is dedicated to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the birth of Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, the head of state of Lithuania that fought against soviet occupation.
I am glad that the first Race Walking Competition, organised in 1975 on the initiative of Kastytis Pavilonis, the current President of the Lithuanian Race Walking Association, have become so popular and have been held consistently and have gained international recognition.
Moreover, more than one olympian grew up here by taking part in the Alytus Race Walking Championships, our young athletes take their first steps and sport lovers also get to know sport walking – it is not only a sporting competition, but also a tradition of our city.
We are proud and congratulate all those who try the asphalt of Alytus!
